KLANG:FOKUS FESTIVAL 22 - 27 SEPTEMBER
What is tone? How will the expression be shaped by the musicians' personal playing style and, not least, by the violin maker's development over a span of twenty years?
Through a week of concerts I wish to let a broad audience explore such questions, with musicians who play my instruments giving the audience powerful listening experiences. Concertgoers do not usually reflect on the dialogue between the musicians and a living violin maker who has built the instruments. I wish to put the spotlight on this, through a festival where the audience gets a new experience and a glimpse into a world that is unknown to most people. 2020 marks 20 years as a violin maker in Oslo for me, and in that connection I would like to make the capital's inhabitants more familiar with my craft.
In music history the composer and the work have held central positions, then the performers and their interpretations of the works. A central element of performance practice and music history that is seldom mentioned is the instruments the musicians play on. The instruments are, after all, absolutely decisive for the artistic result. The instrument is often described as an extension of the body, that is, the central object in a musical performance. Yet this aspect is strangely unproblematised in history and in concert life. With my concert series I wish to examine the artistic significance of the instruments in the interplay between performer, work and audience.
