Valdres sommersymfoni
18. jun. - 27. jun.
Fagernes
We are heading towards brighter times, and can welcome you to yet another special edition of Valdres sommersymfoni! Last year we had to turn the programme around at short notice, the festival was reduced to one weekend, and no international guests could take part. To be able to offer a longer festival this year, while at the same time observing infection control considerations and reducing the number of musicians in the cohorts, we are therefore continuing with a weekend festival this year, but expanding to two weekends. The two weekends will offer two different groups of musicians and two widely different, exciting programmes.
In the festival's first weekend you will meet, among others, a fantastic group of musicians based in Norway, and for the festival's second weekend the foreign artists we had looked forward so much to getting to know last year will come.
New this year is that we have brought on board two festival composers. In the first weekend we meet the young composer Peder Barratt-Due, newly graduated from the USA. Among other things he has composed a sextet inspired by Beethoven's 9th Symphony and by climate change – and by what brings us together and divides us as human beings. We look forward to performing this work for a live audience for the first time! For the festival's second weekend the world-famous composer Pēteris Vasks comes. He has himself expressed that he believes his compositions work best alongside other works and composers. A selection of his compositions is therefore spread over several concerts in festival weekend number two. The main work, the magical violin concerto "Distant Light", is performed by the internationally acclaimed Daniel Rowland in Aurdal kirke.
It is both with the two composers in mind and with the situation we now find ourselves in that we have chosen the festival themes "Light" and "Distant Light". The first festival weekend marks the beginning of a festival filled with light, joy and hope of a world without a pandemic. The following weekend stars from more distant parts arrive, and remind us of the hope of a future where we can come closer to each other, across national borders and cohorts.
