Geiranger
Great music in a small village
From 14 September to 17 September 2023 we will be holding Festspela i Geiranger once again, with a programme consisting mainly of classical music – but also other genres and forms of culture, such as jazz, song, folk music, food culture and much more.
The World Heritage area is a unique setting for great arts and cultural experiences, and our small host village, Geiranger, has proud cultural traditions. Festspela i Geiranger aims to be a regional beacon for presenting high-quality art and culture, and at the same time an ambassador for local character. Food culture is an important part of our festival concept, and so is the nature that surrounds us. We place concerts out on the fjord and up on the mountain 1500 metres above sea level – and everything in between. The audience gets close to the artists and close to the nature and the village. We believe that such diverse, grand musical experiences create community, broaden horizons and develop us both as individuals and as a society.
Work on establishing a festival in Geiranger began in 2019. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the first festival in September 2021 was a success, and we rejoiced over a series of sold-out concerts and satisfied audiences from all over the country. It is in the very name festspel that it is a celebration – a party where we want everyone to be able to take part. An important goal for us is to make classical music accessible to everyone and to invite people to unconventional concert venues that lower the threshold for new cultural experiences.
