Oslo Early

Oslo
Oslo Early is Oslo's own early music festival with music from the Middle Ages to the Romantic era and related musical genres. Until 2016 Oslo lacked a large festival dedicated to historically informed performance practice of older classical music. It has become an important addition to the diversity of the capital's cultural offering, not only by providing its own arena for music and musicians that can otherwise rarely be experienced, but also through the lively approach to the music and the communication that characterise the community.
Oslo Early collaborates closely with important institutions such as Norges Musikkhøgskole, the churches of Oslo, Oslo Kulturskole and NOR59 and has become an important resource in the early music field and in classical music in recent years. Oslo Early aims to bring early music to the fore and let ever new audience members enjoy the pleasure of meeting the world's leading early musicians and the best that Norway has to offer in early music specialists in a mix of new and familiar repertoire from the Middle Ages to Classicism.
The early music movement is one of the most profound musical movements of modern times. Playing the music on the instruments it was written for, based on sources from the period, makes it easier to let the music take shape organically, and it can then become a language that all the musicians speak fluently. The love and enthusiasm that early musicians have for the repertoire is important for discovering and performing ever new finds from forgotten music archives. The early music movement has set in motion a very positive spiral, where ever-increasing knowledge and higher technical playing standards make a larger part of the old repertoire relevant and alive, which in turn increases interest in this way of relating to the music. The music is outgoing and popular with audiences, but deserves even greater attention.
The theme for Oslo Early 2023 is musical exoticism, and through seven concerts over four days this theme is illuminated from many angles. With a top line-up of Norwegian and international musicians, everything is in place for a rousing baroque party!
