Oslo Operafestival
24. sep. - 28. sep.
Oslo
We welcome you to the 19th Oslo Operafestival, organised by Opera til folket. This year too we have unfortunately had to cut the festival down a little because of increased prices and difficult times. Even so, we promise a splendid festival and hope many will find their way to one or more of our events. You will find us around Oslo in week 39. Oslo Operafestival is a great way to experience opera for the first time. For everyone who likes opera, it is a great way to relive the highlights.
We open the festival, as is tradition, outdoors in central Oslo. This year it takes place at Christiania torv on 24 September at 18.00 in collaboration with Oslo Urban Week and Operahøgskolen. We have chosen this place because Kvadraturen has its 400th anniversary this year. It is students at Operahøgskolen who get the honour of singing for the people on this day.
After that it is one thing after another until Saturday. There will be Opera for Children at Gamle Raadhus Scene and Opera Gourmet at Ekebergrestauranten on Wednesday. On Thursday we mark the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's death. This takes place with a free concert with splendid soloists in Gamle Munchmuseet at Tøyen. On Friday we have an Opera Walk in Kvadraturen. Here audiences get to experience brand-new opera monologues composed by Marcus Paus, Bjørn Kruse and Solveig Sørbø. Lars Saabye Christensen, Ketil Bjørnstad, Kate Pendry, Trond Olav Svendsen, Maria Kjos Fonn and Catherine Blaavinge Bjørnevog have written the texts. The walk begins at Christiania torv on 27 September at 17.00. That is exactly 400 years to the day since Christian IV said: "Here the town shall lie". Later the same day audiences can experience an abridged version of Giuseppe Verdi's Aida with splendid soloists in Universitetets aula. On Saturday 28 September we start with an abridged version of Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky at 14.00 at Lørdagsopera. Later the same day we have our second world premiere at Oslo Operafestival, namely The Waves. An opera based on Virginia Woolf's novel of the same name. The English composer Louis Mander has written the music, Tamsin Treverton Jones has written the text, and Einar Bjørge is the director. Opera pub at Grønland Boulebar is a given every Saturday.
We also remind you that we have a number of concerts at Gamle Raadhus Scene the rest of the year.
