In 1991 Risør kammermusikkfest was established with the following aim :
"Risør kammermusikkfest is a non-profit foundation whose purpose is to arrange an annual chamber music festival, presenting both central classical music and more recent repertoire. The aim is to seek out musicians - both Norwegian and foreign - who maintain a recognised high artistic level, or who have documented an indisputable talent. The chamber music festival is to be a national and international forum for chamber music and is also to stimulate music and cultural life in Risør and the region."
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit is the high patron of the festival.
