Oslo Operafestival celebrates 20 years!
In 2006 we started Oslo Operafestival with a stage out in the water at Spikersuppa and an idea of bringing opera out to the people. Twenty years later we are still just as committed to the same thing: Opera should be for everyone – whether you know every single Puccini aria or have never been to the opera before.
From 22 to 26 September we celebrate our 20th anniversary with five days filled with big voices, powerful stories, young talents, humour, drama and opera in both traditional and unconventional venues.
We start at Universitetsplassen, right across the street from where it all began in 2006. As is tradition, students from Operahøgskolen take part in the Festival kickoff.
At Gamle Raadhus Scene there will be opera up close. Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana offers love, jealousy, betrayal and revenge, while Opera & cocktail mixes funny opera arias, a twinkle in the eye and good cocktails.
The youngest will of course get opera too! In Hansel and Gretel, Opera for barna invites nurseries and the whole family into Humperdinck's fairy-tale world. The festival programme also includes Lunch with culture, where the audience can take a break in the middle of the day with live music at Gamle Raadhus Scene.
And what would a festival from Opera til folket be without Saturday Opera? Here the audience gets close to the singers and the music in our intimate hall. This time we offer an excerpt from La sonnambula. There will also be an Opera Pub, where opera meets a far more relaxed pub atmosphere – just the way we like it.
Oslo Operafestival can offer opera that can be big and dramatic, nearly funny, for adults and for children – and it can pop up where you might not expect it.
Over 20 years Oslo Operafestival has filled trams, churches, concert halls, pubs, stages, parks, squares and urban spaces with opera. We have presented established opera stars side by side with young singers at the start of their careers, produced full-length operas and at the same time taken opera out of its usual settings.
We will of course do that when we celebrate 20 years too.
Welcome to five days of opera in the middle of Oslo!
