Oslo Early is Oslo's own early music festival with music from the Middle Ages to the Romantic era and related musical genres. Until 2016 Oslo lacked a large festival dedicated to historically informed performance practice of older classical music. It has become an important addition to the variety of the capital's cultural offering, not only by providing a dedicated arena for music and musicians that can otherwise rarely be experienced, but also through the lively approach to the music and the communication that characterises the community.
In 2026 Oslo Early turns its gaze to the Mediterranean.
With music, musicians and musical impulses connected to the Mediterranean, this year's festival explores an area that through the centuries has been a living hub of cultural exchange. Here musicians, composers and ideas have moved between cities, courts and countries – and left traces in the music far beyond the region's own borders.
The festival opens in Naples and Spain, with Italian elegance, Spanish rhythms and fiery castanets. From there the programme spreads further, from the Renaissance and Baroque to Norwegian traditional music and our own time. Along the way we meet both Norwegian and international performers – among them Bachcelona Consort from Barcelona – and follow some of the many connections that arise when music moves between places, people and times.
One of the year's major marks of celebration is the 400th anniversary of John Dowland's death. The English composer himself travelled south through Europe to Italy, and his music is at the centre when the British tenor Charles Daniels meets Barokkanernes' own Jadran Duncumb on lute.
Oslo Early 2026 invites you on musical journeys between south and north, old and new, the near and the far.
