The theme of the festival in 2020 is SLEEP. In 2020 Hardanger Musikkfest celebrates its 25th festival. The music festival was started in 1996, when the concertmaster Stig Nilsson brought along his musician friends from the Oslo Filharmoniske Orkester and gave concerts at Hotel Ullensvang in Lofthus. The concerts were a success, and the music festival has been repeated every Whitsun since. In 2021 it will be the 25th anniversary, but before that there will be a festival with the theme: SLEEP
