Konserttanken på Neptun Sildoljefabrikk
Neptunveien 10, 8445 Melbu
Neptun Sildoljefabrikk (the Neptun herring oil factory) is a technical-industrial heritage site located on little Svinøya on the south side of Hadseløya in Vesterålen. The factory is an example of the industrial fishing trade from the latter part of the 1800s and on into the 1900s.
Neptun Sildoljefabrikk was established in 1910 by the industrial pioneer at Melbu, Christian Frederiksen, and was in operation under various owners until 1987. At the beginning of the 1990s the factory was taken into use as a museum. Through Neptun's history you can follow Norwegian fishing history across almost an entire century. The site has a fascinating history involving fire, labour struggle and German occupation.
Today it is reuse that characterises the running of the disused industrial premises. Here you will find, among other things, a blues club and a spectacular concert hall in one of the old raw-material tanks. The site was officially listed in 2019 by Riksantikvaren (the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage).
