Sjømilitære Samfund is an association founded in Stavern in 1835. When the navy's main base was moved to Karljohansvern in Horten, the association moved with it. They rented club premises for the first few years, but in time the need for their own premises arose. With financial help from members and other generous donors, the Samfundsbygningen was built by master builder H. Hansen from Christiania. The main building was ready for inauguration on 15 November 1883. Here you will find venerable halls for functions as well as 8 hotel rooms on the second floor. This was where the officers held their club evenings, balls and soirées. They could come for an overnight stay, a meal, a drink at the bar or a game of billiards. When the navy's main base was moved to Bergen around 1960, the activity in the building changed. It was opened up so that civilians could rent it for parties, meetings, overnight stays and other gatherings. In 2017 the hotel «Carl Johan» was ready for inauguration as part of the overall complex. With 39 hotel rooms and a large course and conference department, the offering has become considerably larger than originally – but the history is well preserved. The Samfundsbygningen has had various hosts over the years. The current hosts, Torill Krosvollen Thorsen and Stig Thorsen, took over the running in 2004. Together with their staff, they are proud of the historic gem they look after and are ready to welcome you as a guest.
