Description

With Johan Dalene as soloist in Korngold's Violin Concerto. During 1920–1925 the Ballets Suédois in Paris was a melting pot for boundary-crossing dance and stage art. The company gathered the most gifted avant-garde of the day: the composers Erik Satie and Darius Milhaud, the author Jean Cocteau and the poet Paul Claudel. In 1920 the young Swedish composer Viking Dahl wrote the experimental one-act work The Madhouse (Maison de Fous), based on Pär Lagerkvist's play The Secret of Heaven and called the first significant Swedish modernist work. The musicologist Anders Viklund has produced a new critical edition and new material for The Madhouse, which we get to share this evening. Maurice Ravel's Boléro (1928) is a hypnotic masterpiece, built on a single melody that is repeated and grows ever more powerful. A steady drum rhythm carries the music through shifting orchestral colours. This evening we also meet the season's artist in focus, Johan Dalene. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto in D major (1945) unites romantic warmth with the sound world of film. Written in exile in the USA and dedicated to Alma Mahler, the concerto weaves in themes from Korngold's film music. In collaboration with Östgötateatern. Introduction 30 minutes before the start of the concert. Programme: Viking Dahl: The Madhouse Maurice Ravel: Boléro Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Violin Concerto in D major
