Göteborgs Symfoniker - Jaime Martín & Torleif Thedéen

Dirigent: Jaime Martín

,

Torleif Thedéen, cello

Description

Symphonic tales with cinematic tones and newly written Swedish music. When the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra visits Vara Konserthus, we will enjoy both classical masterpieces and a newly written cello concerto, performed by one of the foremost cellists of our time, Torleif Thedéen. The evening's concert ranges from the grand and dramatic to the delicately poetic. Under the baton of the conductor Jaime Martín, the programme opens with Emilie Mayer's stirring Faust Overture, written in the late 1800s, a powerful work by the German composer who is often compared to a female Beethoven. Then we hear newly written Swedish music in the form of a vibrant cello concerto by the award-winning Swedish composer Mats Larsson Gothe. The concerto is written for his friend, the world-famous cellist Torleif Thedéen, who is also the evening's soloist, and contains both soaring melodies and great drama. For the finale, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's immensely popular symphonic suite Scheherazade awaits. Inspired by the collection of tales One Thousand and One Nights, which can be traced all the way back to the 800s. The music takes us into the story of Scheherazade, a fictional Persian queen who tells a new story every night and manages to make the king so eager to hear the ending that he abandons a cruel, murderous plan. The composer's ability to colour the music is impressive, and the work is full of cinematic melodies that fascinate both the experienced listener and those discovering classical music for the first time.
