Kungliga Operan, colloquially Operan, is Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet/modern dance, with origins from 1773. Kungliga Operan is located in the Norrström block, between Gustav Adolfs torg and Kungsträdgården in Norrmalm in central Stockholm. It changed its name in 1997 from Kungliga Teatern. Of the performances on Kungliga Operan's stage, 60 per cent are opera and 40 per cent ballet. Every year a repertoire is presented with new productions alongside revivals of earlier, historic productions. The opera building is also home to Kungliga Baletten and Kungliga Hovkapellet as well as Kungliga Operans kör. Over the years the Opera has been a venue for many Swedish and international stage personalities and especially honoured court singers/court dancers, people such as Birgit Nilsson, Jussi Björling, Jenny Lind, Christina Nilsson, Elisabeth Söderström, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sixten Ehrling, Anneli Alhanko, Ingmar Bergman, to name a few. Many well-known Swedish opera and dance works have had their world premieres here. Special productions for children and families are also presented every year. Since 2009 the major international Birgit Nilsson Prize has been awarded at a gala on the Stora scenen. The activities at Kungliga Operan were depicted in the five-episode series Livet på Operan, broadcast in 2013. The series is now (2020) available on Operan Play.
