Description
At this concert we meet four strongly profiled composers and the French Virginie Verrez, who is making a brilliant career on the world's concert and opera stages. When Alma Schindler married Gustav Mahler, 20 years her senior, in 1902, her composing career had to take a back seat. Today more and more light is being shed on her fine song collections, in which wistful longing for love has plenty of room. Songs were a central element in Gustav Mahler's work, and to poems by Friedrich Rückert he wrote five atmospheric songs revolving around nature, love and the transience of life. Robert Schumann wrote Overture, Scherzo and Finale shortly after marrying Clara Wieck - a "sinfonietta", dreamy, romantic and passionate. Shostakovich's third string quartet was written in the aftermath of the Second World War and is heard here in a version for orchestra.
