Description
Mozart's Requiem is among his most famous and beloved works. It is the last music he composed before his death. He wrote it at the end of 1791, but only managed to compose roughly 2/3 of the music before he died on 5 December. The work had been commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg for performance on 14 February 1792, on the 1-year anniversary of his young wife's death. Mozart's widow Constanze Mozart needed the fee for the work that Mozart had been promised. She therefore had Joseph Eybler and Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr complete the work. This happened in secret, because Constanze could earn more from the work if she said that it was Mozart who had composed all of it. This has naturally created a great deal of debate about exactly what the most "Mozartian" version should be. Today there are at least 19 versions of the work in which composers have tried to make the most "correct" completion of it. The Requiem is composed for choir, four soloists and a small orchestra. The choir has a very central role in the work, and unlike in Mozart's other works, the vocal soloists mainly sing together. A small orchestra takes part, with two violins, trombone and organ.
