What does 900 years of music created by women composers sound like?
In Female Voices, Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny Hensel, Ethel Smyth, Sofia Gubaidulina, Louise Alenius and ten other composers meet in a programme that moves between the heavenly and the earthly, the introspective and the powerful.
Here are nature and courage, love and loss, faith and freedom. Music written across centuries - but with emotions that are just as relevant today. Experience the young German soprano Antonia Brinkers and Icelandic flautist Kristín Ýr Jónsottir, with pianists Hazel Friedman and Julia Seckler. Together they create a musical portrait of 900 years of experiences, dreams, questions and longings.
The soprano Antonia Brinkers was admitted to the TONALi Bühneakademie in Hamburg in 2025. Alongside her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater she is co-founder of the festival for women composers ”Feminale” and initiator of the exhibition ”Standing Ovation” - Komponistinnen gesehen. The flautist Kristín Ýr Jónsdóttir is a soloist-class student at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium in Aarhus, is on contract with Odense Symfoniorkester and is co-founder of the new musical collective ”Spönn”.
Composers: Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny Hensel, Emilie Mayer, Pauline Viardot, Augusta Holmès, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Cécile Chaminade, Ethel Smyth, Rita Strohl, Ilse Weber, Peggy Glanville-Hicks, Sofia Gubaidulina, Rhonda Larson, Valerie Coleman and Louise Alenius.
This is a programme that invites both rehearing and new discoveries.
