Tønderegnens Musikforening was founded on 16 March 1946 in order to ensure that classical chamber music could be heard in the south-western corner of Denmark. Since then the society has held 4-6 concerts a year. Names such as Wandy Tworek, Else Brems, Emil Telmanyi, Victor Schiøler, Aksel Schiøtz, Friedrich Gürtler, Lone and Herman D. Koppel turn up in the annals from the early years. Later most of the leading Danish chamber musicians have visited Tønder, for example Kim Sjøgren, Anne Øland, Morten Zeuthen, Nikolaj Znaider, Amalie Malling, Kontrakvartetten, Ulrich Stærk, Katrine Gislinge, Esbjerg Ensemblet, Michala Petri, Ars Nova, Musica Ficta, Den danske Blæserkvintet, Inga Nielsen and Andreas Brantelid.
