Late Summer Festival
17. aug. - 23. aug.
Hvide Sande
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 6th Late Summer Festival, which is being held for the 5th time in Hvide Sande – this year also with an extra concert evening in Copenhagen, where the festival originally began back in 2014.
In our 2020 edition of the festival we mark the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827). We can only be amazed and astonished by this unique life's work, still so full of life, independence and so utterly consistent!
A number of female composers will also be highlighted at this year's festival – each of whom, in her own way, carries on Beethoven's impulse towards freedom. From Fanny Hensel (1805 – 1847), who composed at a time when a female composer was almost considered forbidden, to today's young female composers, there is a world of difference; whether it is the Swedish Britta Byström, the Israeli/Danish Rachel Yatzkan or the Grand Old Lady of new music, the Tatar/Russian Sophia Gubaidulina – all are firmly anchored in professional musical life, and at the same time extremely expressive and freedom-seeking.
This year's performing musicians also go their own ways and all belong to the elite in their countries, and that applies not least to the Swedish trio Kv.Arken – a wonderfully unconventional trio of three imaginative women, who move between different styles with the greatest ease. The same can be said of the young Swedish concertmaster, the fascinating Ylva Larsdotter, as well as the Danish accordion virtuoso Bjarke Mogensen, known for his eminent playing of classics such as Scarlatti, but also for his work for contemporary music – at this year's festival that means the young Lil Lacey's solo work.
The festival is also proud to present established musical personalities such as the Swiss elite quartet casalQuartett Zürich and the always innovative German double bassist Frank Reinecke.
The beautiful German word "Geistesverwandte" expresses well what connects all these musicians – a kind of idealistic family…
We wish you exciting and eventful days in Hvide Sande – as well as at our extra concert evening in Copenhagen.
Anette and Helge Slaatto, artistic directors
