New festival in 2024 Viborg Internationale Kirkemusikfestival was established in 2016 by the organists of the churches in Viborg town under the association ”Kirkekoncerter i Viborg”: Their work is backed by the parish councils, Viborg Østre Provsti and Viborg Domprovsti. The organists held the second festival in 2018 and, after a couple of cancellations, another in 2022. It has already been decided to hold the festival again in 2024. The artistic vision, together with local roots and support, is an essential reason why a number of charitable foundations have so far chosen to support Viborg Internationale Kirkemusikfestival. Passion – Ambition – Vision The idea of creating an international church music festival in Viborg arose in 2015 out of pure passion among the town's organists, and after three well-attended festivals in 2016, 2018 and 2022, the festival is now firmly anchored in Viborg's six town churches, and it is part of Viborg Municipality's events strategy. The overall purpose of Viborg Internationale Kirkemusikfestival is to give audiences the chance to experience church music at a high international level. In addition, the festival's vision is to build bridges to new audience groups and, more broadly, to spread awareness of the great musical treasure found in church music in Viborg, in Denmark – and internationally. Both the music written many hundreds of years ago and the brand new. With over 100 church concerts a year, the six churches have for years drawn a large audience to Viborg, where the organists tirelessly present the church music treasure, but often to a narrow and initiated audience. Here the festival, with its great impact and high artistic level, has reached a broader audience. Experience shows that when the festival insists on quality, audiences can confidently expect to experience music that touches, moves and uplifts. The festival's ambition is to demystify and illustrate the music, so that even more people take it to heart and use it when the festival is over, but it will continue to be music that expresses something that reaches beyond the ordinary and everyday. Within this ambition, the audience is presented with church music in many genres and styles, from Renaissance music through the great church works of the Baroque and Romanticism to gospel and jazz. At each festival the festival also commissions new liturgical music, which is subsequently used at services in churches across the country. With the three previous festivals in 2016, 2018 and 2022, it has been possible to achieve local pride and national attention, and the many thousands of visitors bear witness to the festival's absolute justification. At the last two festivals the international profile has been strengthened, and the encounter with young people and audiences unfamiliar with concerts has been developed further. Internationally the festival stands as one of the musical events worth travelling for, and at the same time local ownership has been firmly established. The name Viborg Festival unambiguously signals that this is where church music at a high level is to be experienced.
