Finnish Fascination and the Late-Romantic Chamber Music 25-31/7 2024
Welcome to yet another festive music week with yearning emotions and Nordic sounds, lovely encounters around the music on the beautiful stages of Syddjurs and good energy from the international students at Open Strings Masterclass.
This year's Composer-in-residence is Joel Järventausta from Finland. The 28-year-old composer has already had his works performed internationally by ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Aarhus Symfoniorkester. His music carries the expressive power of late Romanticism, but in a modern musical language. At the festival he takes part with the premiere of a new "Pocket Concerto" written for Niklas Walentin, violin, a string quartet and several smaller works, as well as a talk about Finnish music in connection with the Danish first screening of the film "Echoes of The Universe" about Kaija Saariaho, which was filmed, among other places, in I Djurs og Mols in 2021 and has been shown at festivals around the world.
The late-Romantic central European composers in the years around 1900 explored the limits of expressiveness within the framework of tonality. The search for new tone colours and expressive possibilities led in these years to a multitude of large orchestral works and introduced new instruments into the modern symphony orchestra. At the 2024 festival we will, through a series of concerts, focus on the chamber music composed in this period. These often overlooked gems are, in distilled form, all the expressiveness of late Romanticism.
As always at I Djurs og Mols, the boundaries of what a chamber music concert can be are explored. We see great interest from our audiences of all ages in these concerts, which challenge or expand the genres. When the American poet Peter Gizzi comes to the festival, a selection of his poems is set to music in a genre-breaking concert curated by the cellist and composer Jakob Kullberg, at Maltfabrikken in Ebeltoft.
