Thy Kammermusikfestival was founded in 1994 by local music enthusiasts and has since been supported financially by the county, municipalities and local companies, private sponsors, the Danish Arts Council and foundations such as Augustinus Fonden, BG Fonden, Birgit og Jørgen Warmings Fond, Brødrene Hartmanns Fond, Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl Nielsens Legat, Danmarks Nationalbanks Jubilæumsfond, Det Obelske Familiefond, Dronning Margrethe og Prins Henriks Fond, Erda and Christian Schrøders, Fond, Fonden Morsø Samvirke, Færch Fonden, Grethe og Jørgen P. Bornerups Fond, Gustav Packaléns Mindefond, Højesteretssagfører L. Zeuthens Mindelegat, Kong Frederik og Dronning Ingrids Fond, Knud Højgaards Fond, Oticon Fonden, Sonning Fonden, Toyota Fonden, Wilhelm Hansens Fond and Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond.
In 1996 Thy Kammermusikfestival received the UNIBANK (Nordea) Initiative Prize and in
1998 Danmarks Radio's Bolero Prize for its original and remarkable contribution to the promotion of chamber music.
In recognition of the festival's ever greater importance to the region as a cultural event with international perspectives, Thy Kammermusikfestival received the Viborg Amt Cultural Prize in 2005 and that of Region Nordjylland in 2010.
