Gjern Kirke
Gjern
Gjern kirke lies in East Jutland in the former Gjern Herred, Skanderborg County, now in Silkeborg Municipality, Region Midtjylland. The chancel and nave were built in the Romanesque period of rough fieldstone with hewn corner ashlars over a chamfered plinth. Three portals are preserved with pairs of columns, round-arched lintels and cross-marked tympana; the nave's south and north portals are walled up, the chancel's north portal is still in use. In the masonry of the nave to the north three high-set Romanesque windows can be seen, which are blinded in the embrasure; correspondingly a Romanesque window can be seen in the chancel's north wall. The tower was built in 1861, when the church was roughly restored. The present apse in red brick was built around 1900 over the foundations of an original Romanesque apse.
