Welcome to our interview relay with musicians from the classical music scene! Today we have the pleasure of presenting Sigurd Greve. He works as an oboist in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Here he shares his thoughts on classical music and recommends upcoming concerts for both new and experienced concertgoers!
Name, instrument and profession?
Sigurd Greve, oboist, employed by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra
What are you doing at the moment?
I'm on summer holiday from my orchestra job! But this year I have a summer where I'm practising a lot due to upcoming gigs.
Most overrated composer or piece?
Don't kill me, but I can think of at least 20 violin concertos I like better than Beethoven's... no shade.
And at the opposite end of the spectrum... what music should everyone really get to experience?
Benjamin Britten's operas.
Your last big concert experience - what made it so special?
The month of June was full of highlights! Firstly, we were on tour with the Oslo Philharmonic where we played Brahms' 1st Symphony in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Philharmonie de Paris, among others. After that, I was a guest of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra where we played a concert of classic greatest hits at a rock festival. After that I played solo at a performance at the home of an actor friend of mine, and the last performance before my holiday was an ABBA song at a wedding with just me and a guitarist. All of these were great experiences in their own way!
Which living composer inspires you the most and why?
Right now I'm super inspired by Kristine Tjøgersen. Her album of orchestral works is spectacular.
Can you remember a single event or experience that made you want to become a musician?
No single event, but not coming from a family of musicians, I needed to hear from teachers that there was a future for me in the profession. Meeting other people my age who were motivated and talented was also very important. NUSO (Norwegian Youth Symphony Orchestra) was perhaps the most important meeting place for me, which also led me to the Talent Development Programme at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Do you have any advice for "new listeners" who are curious about classical music and don't go to concerts very often?
My best advice is very simple - buy a ticket and turn up. I think the biggest threshold for many people who are genuinely interested is just to turn up.
Any upcoming concerts you would recommend?
In all modesty, I would like to recommend everyone to come to the opening concert with the Norwegian National Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Festspillene i Elverum. I'll be the soloist in Mozart's Oboe Concerto, and I hope many people will make the trip! Otherwise, I'm very excited about the Oslo Philharmonic's contribution to this year's Ultima Festival, namely "Fire in my mouth" by Julia Wolfe. The piece is an oratorio about textile workers in New York at the beginning of the 20th century and the great factory fire that claimed the lives of 146 working women in 1911. Welcome to the concert on 19 September.
Minister for classical music in Norway for one day - what would you do?
Ensure a stable framework and income for freelancers! And of course, I'd pour a lot of money into the institutions - both cultural schools and orchestras.
Name one thing not many people know about you?
I've worked in symphony orchestras for almost ten years and studied music for seven years, but I've never played a Bruckner symphony.
What do you like to do to relax when you're not playing or rehearsing? Do you have any special hobbies?
Strength training, champagne, tropical birds, quizzes and karaoke
Finally, who would you challenge to take over the baton?
I would nominate my former classmate Victoria Randem, who has an impressive international career

Description

I 1911 oppsto det brann i Triangle Shirtwaist Factory i New York. 146 tekstilarbeidere døde i brannen – de fleste var innvandrerkvinner og barn som hadde arbeidet under ulevelige og farlige kår i fabrikken. Historien deres blir fortalt i Fire in my mouth, et storstilt oratorium for orkester og damekor, skrevet av komponist og Bang On a Can-medlem Julia Wolfe. Fire in my mouth framføres av Oslo-filharmonien, Det Norske Solistkor, Solistkoret Ung og Det Norske Jentekor. Verket tar for seg temaer som fortsatt er brennaktuelle; innvandring, urettferdighet, utrygghet og farlige arbeidsforhold. NB: Det blir et kort intervju med Julia Wolfe i Glasshuset før konserten.
