Description

Welcome to a mighty experience as we bring together Østfold's largest school choir of over 200 singers and perform one of the best-known classical works of the 1900s. O Fortuna! So began the work Carmina Burana. Since the premiere in 1937, choirs all over the world have filled churches and concert halls with the iconic opening movement. It is not only Carl Orff's (1895–1982) best-known work, but is also regarded as one of the most popular works of the 20th century. This is not traditional church music, but a grand work with raw energy, rhythmic drive and plenty of power. Carmina Burana is based on 24 poems from a handwritten collection of poems and songs from the Middle Ages of the same name. Several of them were probably written by travelling artists, provocateurs with a sidelong view of the society of their day. The texts celebrate love, intoxication and desire and criticise religious hypocrisy. The composer Orff has divided the selected collection into several parts: poems and songs that praise spring and budding love, the drinking songs, the dark humour and the celebration of love and desire. These parts are framed by the chorus O Fortuna, a hymn to Fate. When young voices meet great music The music demands great forces. We have gathered them. Together with pupils from all the music programmes at upper secondary schools in Østfold and soloists, we fill Fredrikstad Domkirke with the mighty Carmina Burana. We also have dancers from Kirkeparken videregående skole in Moss. The concert is led by conductor and composer Rolf Gupta, who has previously been chief conductor of Kringkastingsorkesteret and Kristiansand Symfoniorkester. Local and regional cultural life has a central place in our heart. The bond with Østfold is strong, and cooperation with local and regional cultural players is an important part of our work. Cooperation such as this concert is especially important, where we get to share our years-long love of music with children and young people. The concert has unnumbered seating. Doors open at 18:30. Duration: 75 minutes Performers: Rolf Gupta, conductor Sophie Klussmann, soprano Simen Bredesen, tenor Rory Green, baritone Pupils from music, dance and drama at upper secondary schools in Østfold: Askim, Kirkeparken, Greåker, Halden.
