Six hundred sheer metres above Lysefjorden near Stavanger. The picture can stand as a symbol of Stavanger Kammermusikkfestival: surprising - and magnificent. The cellist in the picture is Truls Mørk, who together with the oboist Gregor Zubicky established the chamber music festival in 1991, lifted the festival to an international top level, and led it for 13 years. In 2004 Grieg Trio took over - Sølve Sigerland, violin; Ellen Margrete Flesjø, cello; and Vebjørn Anvik, piano - and in 2010 the responsibility was taken over by the clarinettist Martin Fröst and the pianist Christian Ihle Hadland. Ihle Hadland took over the artistic direction in 2016. The acclaimed cellist Andreas Brantelid joined from 2019 together with Ihle Hadland in the artistic direction. The festival's vision is to be one of Europe's leading chamber music festivals for performers and audience. The consistently high artistic quality is the backbone of the festival. We shall strengthen the art form's intrinsic value through continuation, raising of quality and innovation.Truls Mørk wanted to make the festival an oasis for busy musicians, and it has truly been that for almost 30 years now! Here they live together for a whole week in August, forming a big family where they work, eat - and play - together. Their joy in the inspiring community radiates out to the concertgoers and the wonderful volunteers. The participants recognise the festival as one of the finest festivals in the world for chamber music. When the festival became a member in 1996 of the organisation for Europe's foremost festivals, the European Festivals Association, this recognition was confirmed.
