🎵 CLASSICS GUIDE #3: The instruments of the orchestra - who is who?
⚽️ Let us try to compare the orchestra to a Champions League football team: every position requires its specialists, and together they create magical moments. Let us meet the players!
The strings - the midfielders
As on the football pitch, these are the ones who control much of the game. The violins are the playmakers, while the cellos and double basses are like defensive midfielders who give the team stability and depth. The violas tie it all together, like a good inside forward - always ready to support both up and down.
The woodwinds - the technical wingers
Flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon - virtuoso soloists who can dribble their way through an entire defence. They alternate between being playful dribblers and precise crossers.
The brass - the strikers
Trumpets, horns and trombones deliver the spectacular goals - the big moments that make the audience rise to their feet. When the brass goes on the attack, you notice!
Percussion - the goalkeepers
At the back, the percussionists keep the beat and the tempo - like a conducting goalkeeper. Timpani, cymbals and triangle make sure no one gets out of rhythm.
The conductor and the leader - the manager and the captain
The conductor is like the manager on the touchline - the one who shapes the strategy, keeps everyone together and makes sure everyone pulls in the same direction. The leader (first violin) is like the team captain on the pitch, the one who leads the way and is the link between manager and players.
Did you know that...
The Champions League anthem, which gives football fans all over the world goosebumps, is actually based on Handel's "Zadok the Priest"? This majestic choral piece was written for the coronation of King George II in 1727, and has since been played at every single British coronation ceremony. Next time you hear the Champions League anthem, notice how it builds up just like the original!
This month's door-opener: Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra"
This is the ultimate "get to know" guide! Britten lets each instrument have its minutes in the spotlight, before everything comes together in a fantastic finale. It is like getting a personal introduction to each musician.
