The chief conductor opens the new year with Viennese schwung! Call it a New Year's concert if you like. At any rate, it is a celebration when chief conductor Holly Choe kicks off the new year with both Viennese waltz and orchestral virtuosity from two Strausses and, not least, violin artistry of the very highest class, as we welcome Johan Dalene back to Kork. If you caught his Tchaikovsky last time he dropped by, you know that this is a violinist you would hate to miss. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto is sparkling and full of colour and an ever more popular concerto to put on the programme - but that is not because it is easy to play ... And there will be genuine Viennese music too. The prodigy Korngold had schwung in his music right from the first works he wrote. He was also a connoisseur of the music of Johann Strauss the Younger. In Straussiana the master picks out three not-quite-so-famous Strauss melodies and puts them together into a sparkling tribute. First performed in 1953, it was to become Korngold's last completed work. Strauss's own contribution is the slightly brilliant concert waltz "Tales from the Vienna Woods". These were probably not memories of forest walks by the urbane (and slightly nature-shy) Johann, but rather the delight that these country tunes had reached the cobblestones of Vienna, so that Strauss could play with them. And speaking of play: the German Strauss, Richard, drew inspiration from the stories of the prankster Till Eulenspiegel. And when merry roguish tricks meet one of the greatest orchestral virtuosos in music history, the concert evening in the Aula is complete!
