May offers an impressive series of highlights covering everything from intimate solo concerts to monumental orchestral works. Leif Ove Andsnes opens the month with a solo programme of Chopin in the historic rooms of Baroniet Rosendal, while the promising Isata Kanneh-Mason gives a concert in the Opera's Scene 2.

Trifonov and Szeps-Znaider combine their exceptional talents at the Opera in an emotionally charged programme of Clara and Robert Schumann as well as Webern and Beethoven. Brahms's German Requiem receives a powerful performance by Trondheim Symfoniorkester under Adam Hickox, with the soprano Siobhan Stagg and the baritone Yngve Søberg.

Oslo-Filharmonien presents Stravinsky's legendary "The Rite of Spring", while the season ends monumentally with Dvořák's Cello Concerto performed by Truls Mørk under Klaus Mäkelä. In Stavanger Andris Poga bids farewell as chief conductor with Mahler's Third Symphony, one of the most demanding and extensive works in the repertoire.

Festspillene i Bergen begins at the end of the month with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Bergen Filharmoniske in Messiaen's colourful "Turangalîla Symphony", while Lise Davidsen ends the month with an intimate Schubert evening in Grieghallen together with James Baillieu.

The month of May shows classical music at its most ambitious, from world-famous soloists to monumental orchestral works that demand the very best of both musicians and audience.
