Symphonic Masterpieces - The Sound of Romanticism

Description

Romanticism and Reformation - and four soloists for the price of one. What is better than a concert with one soloist? Well, what do you say to a concert with four soloists? On top of that, all of them are horn players from Kork! And if we count the horn as the very sound of Romanticism, then you get it quadrupled here! Robert Schumann's Konzertstück is rarely performed, and that is probably mostly because of the challenge of bringing together four capable horn players at once, but here you are! Schumann was fascinated by the valve horn, which had been developed a few decades before he wrote the Konzertstück (1849). A valve horn offered more possibilities for virtuoso playing, but the piece is still a real challenge for the horn players (especially the first part). The concert ends with Symphony No. 5 by Felix Mendelssohn, known as the Reformation Symphony. Felix's father made sure that most of the family converted to Lutheranism, and the work was also written for the 300th anniversary of Luther's Augsburg Confession. The work ends with the chorale A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. The British conductor Duncan Ward currently has a major international career, and he visits Kork for the first time. Programme: Jean-Philippe Rameau / Overture to Naïs Robert Schumann / Konzertstück for 4 Horns and Orchestra Felix Mendelssohn / Symphony No. 5, Reformation Symphony
