Welcome to our relay interview series with musicians from the classical music scene! Today we have the pleasure of presenting Ingrid Ose , who was nominated in the previous round. She works as a flautist in Kristiandsand Symfoniorkester. Here she shares her thoughts on classical music and recommends upcoming concerts for both new and experienced concertgoers!
Name, instrument and profession?
I am Ingrid Ose and I work as a flautist in KSO (Kristiandsand Symfoniorkester).
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now we are finishing the season in the orchestra, while I am preparing a few concerts of my own that are coming up before I can take a summer holiday!
Most overrated composer or piece?
The most overrated for my part might have to be Sibelius… Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I have never been such a fan of his symphonies, although I do love the violin concerto!
And at the opposite end… which music should everyone really get to experience?
Of the music everyone should experience, Strauss' Vier Letzte Lieder is probably at the very top of my list right now…😍
Your latest big concert experience - what made it so special?
My latest big concert experience must be my master's concert in Lyon last year. I have had wonderful concert experiences before that, but it was so lovely to end two fantastic years with a really good concert with lots of dear friends.
Which living composer inspires you most, and why?
Among living composers, the first one I thought of was Kaija Saariaho, but unfortunately she is no longer a living composer… But I am including her anyway because she has been an inspiration for a long time and we have played some of her works both at Ose Kammerspel and in the orchestra, and it has been so rewarding and lovely.
Can you remember one single event or experience that made you want to commit to becoming a musician?
I remember very well that in 2nd grade at primary school every pupil in the class got one day in the half year when you were allowed to bring a CD to listen to at lunch, and Maria (my sister, who is also a flautist) and I brought Badinerie by Bach. It was the coolest music we knew, I had just started playing the flute but decided right then that if I ever managed to play it I would be as good as it was possible to be, so I suppose it became a kind of goal back then to practise a lot to get there.
Do you have any role models? Is there anyone who has been especially motivating or inspiring to you?
I have many role models but the most obvious must be my parents and, with regard to becoming a musician, especially my dad. When Maria and I were born we always lay on his lap while he practised, and we have always had music around us. It has been very inspiring, and they have taken us to so many fantastic concerts and done everything to make everything possible. Seeing my dad give concerts and go on tour throughout my childhood made me see that it was possible to make a living from it, and that has been very inspiring.
Do you have any advice for «new listeners» who are curious about classical music and do not go to concerts very often?
To new listeners I would recommend listening to the music a little and perhaps reading up a bit before you go to a concert. For my own part it is always fun to recognise the music being performed, and it becomes easier to listen to somewhat longer pieces. A lot of music is less demanding to listen to than other music, so choosing a concert that is not too complicated is probably also wise!
Any upcoming concerts you would recommend?
Of the concerts I would recommend, I am really looking forward to one of the very first concerts we will do with KSO, namely Steamdome 3 with Ola Kvernberg. It will be a really great concert and we are also going to Oslo Jazzfestival with it. He is fantastic so it is going to be an experience!
Finally - whom would you like to challenge to take over the baton?
I would like to pass the baton on to the harpist Johanna Ander Ljung!
