When Fredriksten Festning was chosen as the County Millennium Site in 2000-2005, the history of Opera Østfold also began. The aim was to turn Fredriksten Festning into a national and international cultural arena. Opera Østfold now has a unique position in the market. In terms of audience, the outdoor opera is the largest in Norway, offering 2.800 seats in the amphitheatre stand. The unique arena is the 8th most visited tourist attraction in Norway with about 300.000 visitors a year. This builds a solid platform for the overall experience, and creates a spectacular visual setting for the productions, which are staged every other year. The upcoming production will be "The Flying Dutchman" in June 2022. Opera Østfold is today a regional opera. The first outdoor opera was a collaboration between Den Norske Opera and Hundreårsmarkeringen Norge 1905 – 2005. The opera was named Aurora, and the plot was taken from the Great Northern War and the fall of Charles XII at Fredriksten festning in 1718, and had its world premiere outdoors at Fredriksten Festning in June 2005. After the success of Aurora in 2005, Opera Østfold has staged the following outdoor operas at Fredriksten Festning: • Il trovatore by Verdi (2007) • Turandot by Puccini (2009) • Carmen by Bizet (2011) • Nabucco by Verdi (2013) • Tosca by Puccini (2015) • The Magic Flute by Mozart (2017) • Il Trovatore by Verdi (2019)
