Göteborgs Operans Orkester consists of 86 musicians and plays in most of the performances given on the Stora scenen. In 2020 the orchestra celebrates 100 years. “The orchestra is very flexible,” says Mette Berntzen, orchestra manager at GöteborgsOperan. “The house has a broad repertoire and we play everything from baroque opera to musicals. The musicians master many different styles and adapt their playing to what is happening on stage.” About two weeks before the premiere the musicians move out of the orchestra hall and begin rehearsing with the rest of the ensemble. The number of musicians in the orchestra pit varies. “If it is a big romantic opera, by Strauss for example, we are all in the orchestra pit. Another time there are only about thirty of us. It depends entirely on what kind of performance it is,” says Mette. GöteborgsOperans Orkester gives its own concerts on the Stora scenen and also goes on tour. Some of the musicians are also active as chamber musicians and play at the opera's foyer concerts. In the programme you can read more about what they have planned this season.
