Description

Thomas Fonnesbæk (b) - Guest: Mads Granum (p) The award-winning and internationally acclaimed bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk presents a very special concert experience in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach meets the free universe of improvisation. With his virtuoso technique and great musical range, Fonnesbæk moves effortlessly between classical music and jazz. In the concert Bach & Bass he interprets and improvises on selected works by Bach – including elements from the cello suites, the solo works for violin and preludes from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. On selected numbers Fonnesbæk is joined by the pianist and organist Mads Granum. Together they explore the meeting between Bach's compositions and the improvisational freedom of jazz in a lively interplay between double bass and piano. During the concert Mads Granum takes part in about four numbers – including a new interpretation of Bach's Violin Concerto in A minor and Oscar Peterson's famous Salute to Bach. Together the two musicians create a dynamic musical space where the structures of the Baroque meet the spontaneity of jazz. The concert may also begin with a singalong, creating a special connection between audience and musicians. Thomas Fonnesbæk received a Danish Music Award in 2019 as Danish Jazz Name of the Year together with the duo Eeg/Fonnesbæk, and in 2021 he was awarded the prestigious Ben Webster Prize.
