RUNDETAARN KLASSIK: NOVO Quartet
Description
What does a light echo sound like? Perhaps you will learn more about it this evening, when NOVO Quartet, one of Europe's best young string quartets, visits Rundetaarn and interprets the current exhibition with a very special performance that connects music and light. In connection with the exhibition Light Echoes, where art becomes a medium for complex astrophysical research, NOVO Quartet invites the audience to a special concert experience, where light installations are woven into the music and create an atmosphere in which time and space almost dissolve. As in the exhibition's installations, the music becomes a mirror of cosmic phenomena, where art and science unite in a sensory experience of light, sound and time. The evening's programme First the quartet plays an excerpt of Henryk Górecki's String Quartet No. 2. This work revolves around memory, repetition and echoes. After a short interval the audience will experience Arnold Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht. An intense and transformative work in which the darkness is gradually broken by light – a musical parallel to the explosion of a star and the hope that arises in its aftermath. Part of a series The concert is the last in a series of four interpreting each of Rundetaarn's exhibitions during 2026, all of which take light as their starting point. In 2026 we mark the 350th anniversary of the astronomer and former head of Rundetaarn Ole Rømer's discovery of the speed of light. The other concerts are: 26 February: Michalak & Schermi 28 May: Kærlighedens sange 27 August: Duo Mischa – Folkemusik på flugt About the musicians NOVO Quartet consists of the violinists Kaya Kato Møller and Nikolai Vasili Nedergaard, the violist Daniel Śledziński and the cellist Signe Ebstrup Bitsch. Since the quartet's formation in 2018 they have performed at some of the world's great chamber music venues such as Wigmore Hall in London and Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. The string quartet's approach to chamber music is curious, and on stage they sparkle with energy, courage and seriousness. NOVO Quartet's achievements include top prizes at the competitions in Geneva, Heidelberg, Carl Nielsen and Trondheim. Most recently they have been selected as BBC New Generation Artists 2025–27 – an important milestone that strengthens their growing engagement in the United Kingdom. From autumn 2025 they are also embarking on a new chapter with a multi-year residency as Ensemble in Association at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Practical information Both before and after the concert, the evening's guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in both the exhibition Light Echoes and the tower's other exhibition about the world-famous astronomer Ole Rømer and his great discovery of the speed of light. It will of course be possible to buy a little something to drink and look around in Sneglegangen or on the platform at the top. The concert is part of the programme for LYSÅR 2026 in Rundetaarn – a whole year in which we mark light and the 350th anniversary of Ole Rømer's groundbreaking discovery of the speed of light.
