Description

After-work concert with the innovative vocal ensemble ENSEMBLE EDGE! Free admission. ENSEMBLE EDGE is an innovative vocal ensemble from Aarhus that since 2016, in collaboration with young, experimental composers, has explored and expanded the boundaries of vocal music. The ensemble is known for its high musical standard, its artistic precision and its remarkable versatility, ranging from classical contemporary music to jazz and electronic expressions. The ensemble often performs in alternative settings, e.g. a shopping centre, a courtroom and a swimming pool. The concert takes up and puts into words loneliness as a shared human and societal problem, and it proposes the community of song as a way out of loneliness. In the concert the audience is invited right into the performance of the music. With support from the singers in the ensemble, the audience gets the chance to sing along to some of the concert's melodies and thereby meets the ensemble, each other and themselves in a musical community. Eight singers from Ensemble Edge perform at the concert under the direction of Mathias Skaarup Sørensen: Julie Krog Jensen, Nadja Marie Schmedes Enevoldsen, Daniella Flórez, Andrea Krüger Holm, Yngve Loft Lyngsø, Mathias Kvistborg, Andreas Mathias Gade and Henrik Felter. Works by Carl Nielsen, Arvo Pärt, Ola Gjeilo, Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Judith Weir, among others, are sung. ENSEMBLE EDGE has premiered a number of striking works, including the prize-winning composer and sound designer Alan Hankers' Coalescence for choir and string quartet, Nadja Marie Schmedes Enevoldsen's choral work Respirare, Lil Lacy's staged choral work CRAWL CRAWL CRAWL, experienced from the poolside in a swimming pool, Niels Rønsholdt's Den Stærkes Ret - Den Svages Pligt - Del I, which took place in the court in Aarhus, and Marie Højlund's A Rite of Passage, which was performed in connection with the opening of James Turrell's work As Seen Below - The Dome, a Skyspace at ARoS. The ensemble has also released the album Dimma, which is a tribute to the Swedish pianist Jan Johansson. The artistic direction is handled by conductor Mathias Skaarup Sørensen and ensemble manager and singer Andrea Krüger Holm.
