Pärt, Vasks & Shostakovich 11

Dirigent: Dmitry Matvienko | Solist: Aylen Pritchin, violin

Description

Breathless beauty in music by Pärt and yearning, meditative tones in Vasks’ exceptional violin concerto – with Shostakovich's fierce Symphony No. 11 as the ultimate contrast. “Vasks himself described Distant Light as ‘nostalgia with a touch of tragedy’. I believe this distant light is an image of an ideal world, hovering between past and future, between memory and hope. Where? We do not know. What matters is the longing itself. – Aylen Pritchin Three works you may not have heard before – and that you must not miss! Vasks’ violin concerto is beauty sublimated into sound. Intense and intensely meditative, powerful and vulnerable at the same time. This could well become the listening experience of the year. Not least because the soloist is Aylen Pritchin, a versatile and expressive musician. In Silhouan’s Song Pärt transforms silence into the purest, most unadulterated music, suffused with simple and heartfelt faith. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 is a bitter whiplash of a symphony. It is extremely gripping in its violent depiction of a bloody massacre. “White birds under a black sky,” the great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova described the symphony. In other words, it is a work you must not miss the chance to hear – especially since it is the first time that Aarhus Symfoniorkester plays it.
