Description
The cube references a contemporary form of ‘putting oneself on display’. On the internet, we present ourselves digitally; a part of us becomes visible without this necessarily revealing anything about our actual reality, and without us truly connecting with others. Within the cube, this situation becomes physical: the musician is visible and yet isolated at the same time. He performs for a live audience at a venue that provides a space for people to come together and interact, yet remains within his own, closed system. The truth that prevails within the cube is not the truth that reaches the audience. Musically, this creates an endless loop: the same action repeated over and over, the constant repetition and re-consumption of one’s own reality. Perhaps, over the long term, we will find ourselves in new, unknown states; perhaps we are merely going round in circles. Linked to this is the question of what constitutes the human element in an increasingly digitalised form of music. Where do human emotions go when technical systems take over more and more decisions? What happens to the ‘flawed’, the imperfect and the unpredictable – the very things that can make music human? And where do spaces for the new emerge?
