Description
V. Aulin: String Quartet No. 1 in F major Performers: Ulrike Kipp Christensen, violin; Carl Sjöberg, violin; Esther Mielewczyk, viola; Benjamin Lund Tomter, cello L. v. Beethoven: Clarinet Trio in B flat major, Op. 11 Performers: Kenneth Larsen, clarinet; Jonathan Slaatto, cello; David Strong, piano E.W. Korngold: Piano Trio in D major, Op. 1 Performers: Simona Bonfiglioli, violin; Jonathan Slaatto, cello, Ole Bartholin Kiilerich, piano The concert opens with the Swedish composer Valborg Aulin's first string quartet from 1884, which is both inventive and thoroughly Romantic. From there we travel back to 1797, when a young Beethoven was establishing himself as a chamber music composer, among other things with his lively "Gassenhauer" trio, which includes a set of variations on a true earworm - a "Gassenhauer" - that haunted the streets of Vienna at the time. And then we round off with a youthful work of near-symphonic proportions, written by Erich W. Korngold, the Austrian child prodigy who became one of Hollywood's most influential composers. He wrote the piano trio at the age of 12 in 1910 and dedicated it to his father - and it has since been acknowledged as a masterpiece within the fin-de-siècle tradition.
