Odense Symfoniorkester – one of Denmark's five regional orchestras – was founded in 1946, but its roots go all the way back to around the year 1800. From being a theatre orchestra which also played symphonic music, the orchestra today stands as a modern symphony orchestra with a high level of activity and in constant development. The orchestra is based at Odense Koncerthus, which opened in 1982. Most of the orchestra's concerts take place in the Carl Nielsen Hall, a concert hall with excellent acoustics, seating for 1,212 people and equipped with a 46-stop organ built by one of the world's leading organ builders, Marcussen & Søn. Odense Symfoniorkester had 22 musicians at its founding, but has grown steadily over the years and now has 73 permanent members. The orchestra gives about 100 concerts a year with a repertoire that stretches from the Baroque to the music of our own time.
