Odense Barokfestival
The qualities, the value and the splendour of the baroque music repertoire performed on original instruments and, as far as possible, according to original performance practice are dawning on many people and gaining ground in many places in Europe. In Odense too.
The musical movement in which baroque and early music is played on original instruments and with the (smaller) forces for which the music was once composed is now also gaining a foothold in Odense. Over the last 2-3 decades, enthusiastic musicians, larger and smaller ensembles and orchestras around Europe have (re)discovered and cultivated the music of the baroque period, i.e. from approx. 1600 to 1750. All in an enthusiasm for, and a search to find, the "original" sound - at least as one imagines it. People are still experimenting with this finer, lighter and more transparent sound, in which the gut strings of the string instruments, the horsehair of the bows, the quills of the harpsichord and the keys of the woodwinds may well be heard. They play at the original lower pitch with a = 415 Hz. With a greater understanding of, among other things, the dances of the baroque and their associated steps, they seek the music's historical and "authentic" tempi, emphases, bowings and phrasing. Baroque music is full of juice and vigour, which more and more people are realising. The period's great composers Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, Purcell etc. "live" and many lesser-known and entirely forgotten composers are rediscovered, brought to life and played. "Research" is being done into baroque music on many fronts. Instrument makers try to work out the construction of the instruments of the day - often beautifully decorated - and copy them. For although early music lay dormant for several hundred years, some of the finest instruments the world has ever seen come from outstanding instrument makers of baroque northern Italy. Sheet music is found, discovered and printed. Concerts and festivals spring up and the availability of fine CD recordings increases.
