Frederiksværk Musikfestival was founded in 1991 by one of the prominent personalities of Danish musical life, the then cellist and professor Asger Lund Christiansen, together with a small circle of enthusiasts in Halsnæs Kommune.
After 5 years as artistic director, Asger Lund Christiansen was succeeded by the cellist Charlotte Lund Christiansen. In 2000 she took the initiative to expand the festival's content with a further 8 concerts divided into 2 series with different themes, and work was then done to also present high-profile artists from abroad, as well as to focus further on brand-new chamber music.
Michael Dabelsteen – double bassist in DR Symfoniorkestret – has been artistic director since 2001 and has been in charge of the overall planning of the annually recurring concert series.
