CLASSICAL DAYS 2023
THEME: "HUMOUR, PLAY AND LAUGHTER"
Welcome to the theme of Klassiske Dage anno 2023: "Humour, play and laughter." Many may perhaps feel that there is not much to be amused by at the moment, considering the state of the world. The theme may seem somewhat daring, even a provocative choice. Klassiske Dage is, however, first and foremost a festive musical celebration, always with quirky sides, offbeat angles, world premieres, freely flowing interdisciplinarity, innovation and surprising ways of experiencing the music – and at the highest international level, where the whole musical food chain is nurtured at the same time, always with a dramaturgy that changes every year – and here the element of play, creativity and humour is an important focal point.
As the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote: "What can be considered human feelings? Surely not only lyricism, sorrow, tragedy? Does laughter not also have a claim to the high title? I will fight for the legitimate right to laughter in 'serious' music."
For poor Shostakovich – a hypersensitive and extremely nervous temperament – it was hell and absolute terror to be a composer under Stalin's regime, which strongly affected his means of expression and work as a composer and as a human being. Here laughter at times even became a weapon – and a unifying force.
An indispensable element in music is play! It is said that animals with a relatively long childhood play the most, and that these species often have larger brains. Even if you prevent animals and people from playing, they simply invent a new way to play even more. That is fantastic! For play gives access to new perspectives, innovation and research, and facilitates play and learning.
W.A. Mozart loved to play musical sequences backwards and was fond of a "musical dice game". It was a system that used dice to randomly generate music from pre-composed possibilities. Likewise, he could write a meaningless Latin text that sounded like bawdy German phrases when the singers performed it. The dear Mr Mozart was a charming blend of prankster and genius.
We look forward to welcoming listeners and audiences from near and far to Klassiske Dage anno 2023 – to musical humour, play and laughter:
A warm welcome!
Janne Thomsen, flautist, artistic director and director of Klassiske Dage, Holstebro
