Copenhagen Opera Festival is a visionary, unifying and above all living festival, which every summer re-enchants Copenhagen with a lavish menu of opera in all its guises. We are in constant dialogue with the new, challenging voices and the eternal classics that transcend time and place. With the important stories that mirror our society here and now. And with the city that surrounds us and becomes unique stages. In short: the heart of the festival beats all year round to bring us all together around the wild and wondrous world of opera. Since 2009 Copenhagen Opera Festival has brought the greatest artists to the capital, where they have filled concert halls as well as theatres, streets and canals with world-class song and music. With an international outlook and an eye for local and national talents, year after year we have put together a versatile programme of performances, concerts and events that embraces both the aficionado, the curious and the family with children. In 2021 we launched the Festival Stage at Den Røde Plads, which presents opera in the top league at street level, completely free. The tent in the middle of Nørrebro attracts up to 10,000 audience members every year, as it hosts everything from opera community singing and masterclass concerts to original orchestras, new productions and of course the traditional Opening Concert. At Copenhagen Opera Festival you can experience revitalised classics side by side with brand-new works. We range from ambitious international productions to small productions by experimental, fresh talents who expand the limits of what opera is and can be. In recent years the festival has been behind newly written and award-winning titles such as ‘Nordkraft’ and ‘Lisbon Floor’, international collaborations such as ‘Sky in a Small Cage’, and daring stagings of Puccini's trilogy ‘Il Trittico’. Our family version of Wagner's Ring will play all over the country in the coming years. And behind the scenes, major works and new national collaborations are already taking shape for the festivals of the next few years. Every year we invite an opera star to the city as Guest Artist of the Year, celebrate a new Danish voice with the prize Opera Talent of the Year and facilitate new meetings for the independent players of the Danish and foreign opera scene. With our workshops and curious conversation events, we invite the audience behind the scenes and into the codes and riddles of opera - and investigate what happens if you present opera in a prison, a student lorry or in new digital worlds. Welcome to Copenhagen Opera Festival!
