Odense Barokfestival
13. sep. - 20. sep.
Odense
The musical movement in which Baroque music and early music are played on original instruments and with a (smaller and preferably standing) ensemble of the kind the music was once composed for has, with Odense Barokfestival, gained a foothold in the middle of Denmark too.
In 2016 the first Odense Barokfestival was able to open for an enthusiastic audience from Odense and Funen with three well-attended concerts. Since then, with roughly 100 concert productions, Odense Barokfestival has established itself as one of Scandinavia's largest festivals for Baroque music and is delighted to be able to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2026.
The festival dives into the great ”treasure chest” and tries to cover every nook and cranny of Baroque music and has over the years focused on both geographical areas and periods (including English and early German Baroque) and composers (including Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach), and every year it brings a wide spectrum of Baroque instruments and singers (including the countertenor, theorbo, cornett, Baroque trumpet and harpsichord) into play.
Over the years the audience has been presented with music by both the great, famous Baroque composers and the period's many lesser-known composers. Odense Barokfestival has been behind the production of Purcell's Baroque opera Dido & Aeneas, and among the many artists the festival has had the pleasure of welcoming at its concerts are big names such as the Baroque violinist Peter Spissky, Drottningholms Barockensemble, the Baroque cellist Mime Yamahiro-Brinkmann, the recorder player Bolette Roed, the percussionist and flautist Poul Høxbro, the Baroque trumpeter Justin Bland, Musica Ficta, Lene Langballe, cornett, and not least the festival's resident ensemble Ensemble Barocca and many more. Odense Barokfestival has also established a well-rehearsed (festival) orchestra, Odense barokensemble/barokorkester, which takes part in the festival's smaller and larger concerts, always under the musical direction of the harpsichordist, organist and choir leader Babett Hartmann.
For the 2026 season Odense Barokfestival has put together an anniversary programme that seeks to touch the audience first and foremost Baroque-musically, but also through togetherness, for we still set great store by ending the day's last concert with a cosy, social ”Nachspiel” for the audience and the performers…
We wish you a very enjoyable time!
