Artos Kvartetten is proud to present some truly fantastic musicians and exciting programmes at Artos Festival 2023. Artos Festival is a chamber music festival in Aarhus where the string quartet Artos Kvartetten is the continuing ensemble and artistic leadership. The festival made its debut in 2022, so this season is the second time the festival is held. For the opening concert we have invited four of our colleagues from Aarhus Symfoniorkester. With the oboist Oliver Nordahl we play Mozart's String Quintet No. 2 in the version with oboe instead of 1st violin. The bassoonist Maksim Kapinskii is our new colleague in the orchestra, and together with the double bassist David MCilfatrick we end the concert with Francaix´s sextet for bassoon and string quintet. The stars, violinist Karen Gomyo and pianist Kunal Lahiry, both resident in Berlin, play Chausson's Poeme with the Quartet. At this concert you can hear the Venezuelan-French composer Reynaldo Hahn's violin sonata. Gomyo does not play in Denmark very often, so this is a chance to seize. As part of the festival's concept, we put on a genre-crossing concert. This year it is with our good friend, the jazz bassist Thommy Andersson, who brings along two fantastic musicians, the singer Josefine Cronholm and the trumpeter Kirk Knuffke. Starting from works written by, among others, Thommy, we will experiment with how to make a string quartet and a jazz trio swing together. The closing concert is with our good acquaintance Tanja Zapolski, where we have programmed Shostakovich's Piano Quintet and Brahms's String Quartet No. 1. Eigil Laursen from the board has set up a collaboration with students from the music programme at the two upper secondary schools Statsgymnasiet and Syddjurs Gymnasium. We are curious to see what the young people will contribute and what thoughts they have. Welcome to the festival! Artos Kvartetten & festival director, Brian Friisholm
