Smørum Kirke
Smørum
Smørum Church lies on the eastern edge of the village of Smørumovre, about 20 km north-west of central Copenhagen (Region Hovedstaden). The original Romanesque church is believed to have been built around 1170. It consisted of a nave and a smaller chancel. It was built of roughly hewn fieldstones. According to legend, it was decided at the Isøre assembly to introduce Christianity in Smørum. Stones were gathered in the field for the construction and a site was chosen between Hove and Smørumovre. But what was built by day was torn down at night by evil forces. The building of the church was therefore moved to the present site. The long walls of the present nave date from the original church.
