León & Lightfoot: Salle de Danse

Matthew Rowe

Description

The audience favourites are back With humour, striking stage images and innovative steps, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot have long since captivated Norwegian audiences. Now they return with two works – one Norwegian premiere and one of their most celebrated ballets. Can we make connections without touching each other? This question lies at the heart of the choreographer duo León and Lightfoot's new creation Salle de Danse, danced in Norway for the first time. The answer is yes – and when 40 dancers fill the entire stage, the result is powerful and movingly vulnerable. Salle de Danse turns its gaze to the very foundation of a dancer's everyday life: the ballet class. Inspired by this daily ritual, the work grows in their familiar style: with long lines and striking details, breakneck solos and arresting duets. The forerunner of Salle de Danse was originally created as a film during the pandemic, choreographed by Paul Lightfoot. Now it is being recreated and developed further for the stage, with a new title and newly written music by the award-winning Ilya Demutsky – performed by the Opera Orchestra.
