Den Norske Opera & Ballett is the country's largest institution for music and the performing arts, and is to present opera, ballet and concerts of the highest artistic quality. DNO&B consists of the companies Nasjonalballetten, Nasjonalballetten UNG and Nasjonaloperaen, as well as Operaorkestret, Operakoret, Barnekoret and Ballettskolen.
Den Norske Opera gave its first performance at Folketeatret in 1958, with Kirsten Flagstad as opera director. In 2008 the new opera house in Bjørvika opened, and we changed our name to Den Norske Opera & Ballett. This was a consequence of opera and ballet now being treated as equal art forms with us.
The opera house in Bjørvika is the main arena for our art, but we also perform in other places, both nationally and internationally. We are approx. 600 permanent employees, spread across nearly 40 professions and nationalities.
