León & Lightfoot: Salle de Danse

Matthew Rowe

Description

The audience favourites are back With humour, striking stage pictures and innovative steps, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot have long since captivated the Norwegian audience. Now they return with two works – one Norwegian premiere and one of their most celebrated ballets. Can we form connections without touching one another? This question underlies the choreographer duo León and Lightfoot’s newly created Salle de Danse, which is being danced in Norway for the first time. The answer is yes – and when 40 dancers fill the entire stage, the result is powerful and movingly vulnerable. In Salle de Danse the gaze is directed at the very core of the dancer’s everyday life: the ballet class. Inspired by this daily ritual, the work grows forth in their familiar style: with long lines and distinct details, breakneck solos and striking duets. The precursor to Salle de Danse was originally created as a film during the pandemic, choreographed by Paul Lightfoot. Now it is being recreated and developed further for the stage, with a new title and to newly written music by the award-winning Ilya Demutsky – performed by Operaorkestret.
